Pit Tomb

A pit tomb is a simple type of burial structure where a pit or trench is dug into the ground to inter the deceased. This form of burial is one of the earliest and most basic types of tombs, commonly used across various ancient cultures. In ancient burial practices, pit tombs could vary in size and complexity, but their main characteristic was the burial of the body or multiple bodies within a dug-out pit, often covered with stones or earth after interment. In some cases, a grave marker, such as a stone slab, might be placed above the pit.
